“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

Pure

Pure
I wish to be pure
My own sense of transparency
To stand before you in a clear and open heart
To remain untainted

Perhaps to anyone else
It may seem trivial, insignificant
But to me
It is everything

I only wish to stay clear within myself
Like summer skies in blue speaking with white clouds
Like winter skies where the moon lingers among the stars
I long to be refined in spirit

Even my hesitation made honest
Like a light that resembles hope
I wish to be myself

About this piece

What did you think or feel after writing and reading this poem?

I try not to overthink. I want to trust my intuition, and still be both beautiful and right. That’s the kind of person I admire.

When did you write it, and under what circumstances?

When so many things rush through my mind at once, I just find myself wishing I could simply be pure and simple.

If this poem were turned into a song, what would it sound like?
