“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

Today

Today

Saying a lot of small things

Making a lot of small songs

Stacking one small thing upon another

Setting aside for a while the longing for brilliance

Talking a lot of small stories

Taking a lot of small detours

Together with the beauty found along the way

We move forward one day at a time

Yesterday today tomorrow

Was here am here live

One day one day one day

Moments that cannot be filled by grand things alone

Small things warm our cheeks

Quietly steadily we live now

Moving toward a humble and earnest form

Not waiting for miracles

We go to meet them

Saying a lot of small things

Reading a lot of small songs

Together with the wonders met along the way

We move forward one day at a time

Yesterday today tomorrow

Was here am here live

One day one day one day

On a clear night

We leap with joy at the falling snow

Big flakes my mother says

Softly steadily it piles up

The world returns to a blank page

A voice of freedom calls

And we remember we can go anywhere

Not waiting for dawn

We go to meet it

Yesterday today tomorrow

Was here am here live

Today today today
