“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

Believing Too Much in Words

Believing Too Much in Words

Believing Too Much in Words

A talk we once had

I hurried to turn into a poem

afraid it might vanish if left untold

A conversation I could never prove alone

If it’s sunk to the bottom of the world

turning quietly into coral

that would be enough

We had nothing

yet when we both said yes, that’s true

it felt as if we held

something precious

About this piece

When did you write it, and under what circumstances?

I can’t remember when it was.

But it feels like something I’ve always felt is written there.

If this poem were turned into a song, what would it sound like?

A fast-paced rock number in a minor key.
