“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

SEA YOU

SEA YOU

I saw the blue sky on the water surface

the day slowly dimming

what will you do now

a bird called and flew away

to become a memory

as the next journey nears its end

this gentle journey lifts off too

an embrace

a wave of the hand

see you again

I watch your back

and what you gave me glows deeper

so shall we go

I tell you

to meet a new day

About this piece

What did you think or feel after writing and reading this poem?

Let's go, buddy.

When did you write it, and under what circumstances?

When I was watching the ocean.

If this poem were turned into a song, what would it sound like?

like a bright electric riff, softly drifting into the air.
