“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

Become a Destination

Become a destination.

The world is richer

than a lifetime

spent only traveling.

One day

become a destination.

Just as there are people

who are happy

to see you arrive

be someone

who welcomes another.

A lifetime

is far too short

to keep setting out

meeting

and meeting again.

To travel

is to learn

the happiness

found in the places we visit.

It is also

to know

how precious

a destination can be.

We are fragile.

And so

we find

the years

layer upon layer

in the people we meet

in the lives they have lived

in the landscapes before us

and learn

to hold life

close again.

Then one day

may we ourselves

become a destination.

May people arrive

and find themselves

embracing life

once again.

Then

our journeys

will continue

richly

into what lies ahead.

A journey

is where

countless lives

meet one another.

Today

Tomorrow

it is always new.

If one day

I could become

a small part

of someone's journey

If one day

I could journey

to you as well

The journey

would surely

be new

again.
