“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

TOTTEOKI LETTER

TOTTEOKI LETTER

At the start of your smiling journey
I too I too
Sunlight and wind
Blue and green
All of us gather for the meeting

Long time no see and nice to meet you
Sorry and thank you
We raise our glasses with smiles
and turn into the color of sunset together

Those who looked up from their letters
Those who saw someone beautiful ahead
The words born for one special person
were all waiting together that day

Someday
my future self too
with you with you
will follow this precious day
and meet again on a green hill

See you
take care
To you who waved your hand
we live as if writing a lovely letter
turning our days into invitations
to meet you again
under the blue sky

About this piece

When did you write it, and under what circumstances?

The day after that special day.

poem by Shohei Koyama
photograph by Shigeki Naganuma

If this poem were turned into a song, what would it sound like?

A song that turns an ordinary day into a small anniversary
not a grand melody
just something you hum from time to time
a song that becomes someone’s special one
