“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

To Smile

To Smile

To you who smile with calm grace

I wish to speak in clear and gentle words

Like a fish moving through the blue joyful sea

Like an island resting in the soft red sunset

Like cherry blossoms drifting in early spring

They fade quietly

neither sharp nor heavy

leaving only a light trace like a dream

Like a sound that fades from the ear

yet stays behind as something warm and kind

If such clear words could reach you I would be glad

So I look at the sky

pause beneath the light through the trees

take my time

write

find joy

and smile
