Dear Future Me Dear Future Me
“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.
Blue Days
Because we were blue we ran
Because we were blue we dove right in
Because we were blue we caused hurt
Because we were blue we got hurt
To be blue is precious
To stay blue is hard
To be blue is hard to forgive
And sometimes being blue hurts so much
The clear blue sky is beautiful
Still clear and blue it disappears somewhere
Do we lose what matters
because we are blue
or because we have lost our blue
Do we find what matters
because we are blue
or because we have forgotten what it was to be blue
I cannot get blue out of my mind
so I gaze up at the blue sky
I want to remember the blue in me
so I chase after those who are still blue
In the beginning everything
was equally blue and alive
the world before our eyes laughing and crying
The deep rich blue sky is still the same
It finds me
and sends sunlight down wanting to play
The sea still shines as beautifully as ever
It comes toward me
and plays with me in waves
If because of the blue in me
I could tan my skin and break a sweat
and run toward the water’s edge
My heart shining blue
When was it that every secret made it shine
Those were blue days far away
Dreams born of being blue
A story of happiness born of being blue
Because we were blue...
