“Dear Future Me” is a series in which Shohei Koyama—poet and owner of JIYUCHO — delivers poetic words in Japanese and English, like letters to his future self that trace the subtleties of everyday life. I hope this becomes a place like your mailbox where postcard poems arrive.

Selflessness

Selflessness

Surrounded by colors

I wonder what I am to write

yet again with a single pen

in a single color

I try to draw the world

Knowing that arrogance

and still unable to stop

leaving even loneliness behind

on a blank sheet

only intuition moves

Within thought I could never catch it

there’s no time to think

only a something like me yet not me

moving toward the place

where something new begins to be written

That alone is certain

About this piece

What did you think or feel after writing and reading this poem?

I am tiny, and infinite.

When did you write it, and under what circumstances?

A night spent listening to the words of those who have lived twice as long as I have — people who drink well, laugh well, and know much about life.
